A series of projects will upgrade the Coatesville-Downingtown Bypass to improve safety, reduce congestion, accommodate planned growth, improve facility deficiencies, and improve system connectivity.

The Coatesville-Downingtown Bypass is a 14.5-mile freeway that passes through the City of Coatesville, Downingtown Borough, and Caln, East Caln, Sadsbury, Valley, West Brandywine, West Caln, and West Sadsbury Townships in Chester County. The facility was constructed via two separate projects in the late 1950s and early 1960s. It provides an important link in the regional transportation network, connecting to other key transportation arteries including Business US 30, US 322, PA 113, PA 340, PA 82, and PA 10.

In the course of evaluating the project corridor needs, a series of five independent projects have been identified:

  • Intelligent Transportation System (US 30, Section ITS) – This project consists of the provision of Intelligent Transportation System improvements (ITS) for an 11-mile corridor of US 30 in the City of Coatesville, and Caln, Sadsbury, Valley and West Sadsbury Townships. This project will also include the installation of ITS improvements on Business US 30 from PA 82 in Coatesville to the merge with US 30, as well as the roadway segments of Airport Road, PA Route and PA 340 from Business US 30 to the US 30 Bypass.

 

  • Business 30/PA 10 Project (US 30, Section 010) – This project consists of a 1.7-miles corridor of US 30 in Sadsbury and West Sadsbury Townships, extending from approximately 1,250 feet west of PA 10 to approximately 1,000 feet east of the Old Mill Road overpass. This project will include improvements to the PA 10 and Business US 30 approaches to US 30.

 

  • Airport Road Project (US 30, Section AIR) – This project consists of a 3.9-mile corridor of US 30 in Sadsbury, Valley, and West Caln Townships, extending from approximately 1,000 feet east of the Old Mill Road overpass to approximately 950 feet east of the Wagontown Road overpass. This project will include improvements to the US 30/Airport Road Interchange.

 

  • PA 82 Project(US 30, Section 082) – This project consists of a 2.1-mile corridor of US 30 in the City of Coatesville and Valley Township, extending from approximately 950 east of the Wagontown Road overpass to approximately 2,000 feet west of Reeceville Road. This project will include improvements to the US30/PA 82 Interchange and the PA 82/PA 340 intersection.

 

  • Eastern Project (US 30, Section CER) – This project consists of a 7.0-mile corridor of US 30 in the Borough of Downingtown, and Caln and East Caln Townships, extending from approximately 2,000 feet west of Reeceville Road to the Business US 30 Interchange. This project will include the reconstruction of US 30 and improvements to the US 30 interchanges with Reeceville Road, PA 340, US 322, and PA 113/Norwood Road.
